Sermon / Learning to Speak / Mathew 12:22-37
All kids know the rhyme: Sticks and stones may break my bones…but words can never hurt me.
And all know adults know this is ridiculous. We all know few things can cause as much pain…or as much joy as words.
In Matthew chapter 12 we have one of Jesus’ strongest and most forceful statements about the power of our words. Jesus compares our words to fruit.
The FDA recommends 2-4 servings of fruit daily, but we consume 1,000’s of servings of words. And those words, just like fruit can bring vitality or be filled with venom. They can be ripe or they can be rotten.
The 1,000s of servings of verbal fruit we consume each day have the power to heal and make healthy or if they are poisoned, they have the power to infect and destroy.
We live in a verbally toxic world. And we are men and women of unclean lips, living among other men and women of unclean lips. Where can we turn to find words of healing and hope, life and vitality?
Join us this Sunday as we look at the power of our words. And maybe we will learn a new rhyme:
Sticks and Stones could not break His bones…His Word can Heal me!
